When Will Truck Prices Drop?

The beginning of 2020 saw the coronavirus pandemic reach the United States and begin to impact everything from supply chain activity to travel. By March, it had spread to the point that Utah decided to limit events and proximity. Virtually every industry was affected, not the least of which was the automotive industry, which saw available inventory dry up thanks to issues with automotive chip production, among other things. This drove prices for trucks, both new and used, up significantly. The unusually high inflation rates that began in mid-2021 didn’t help anything either. Sky-high prices have left many consumers wondering when they can expect truck prices to drop.

A Complicated Problem

It would be nice if the only problem with truck prices was a lack of supply for the amount of demand. The fix would be relatively simple: just manufacture more trucks. While supply and demand are part of the equation, it’s not the whole of it.

Part of what drives truck prices is everything that comes with them. Trucks today are not the same as trucks from decades ago. They tend to be bigger, have more luxury features, and are a lot more powerful than the no-frills work trucks that used to be so common. Those factors, in addition to the demand for offroading capabilities, drive truck prices higher.

Then there’s the matter of inflation, which is only just showing signs of slowing down. Everything, including trucks, costs more today than it did a few years ago. While some degree of inflation is to be expected, the current rates have prompted the Fed to increase interest rates in an attempt to slow inflation down. Inflation slowing down is welcome news for consumers who find themselves dipping more and more into dwindling savings accounts, though higher interest rates are likely less welcome news.

Hope on the Horizon

If the sky-high prices all around have you stressed about affording a new truck there is hope on the horizon. Inflation seems to be slowing down, thanks to the Fed’s efforts. While supply chain issues are still very prevalent, they are slowly getting sorted out. The automotive chip shortage is still ongoing but is showing signs of improving. This should help alleviate some of the supply issues that have driven truck prices higher. Higher interest rates have also influenced demand. In this case, it’s been driving demand down. As supply increases and demand decreases, you can expect to see prices react accordingly. This is all relative, of course, as inflation will likely be prevalent and have an impact on truck prices for the foreseeable future.

Truck prices tend to be higher than passenger vehicle prices as a general rule. The impressively high prices we’ve seen over the last couple of years have taken that tendency to a whole new level. It’s not easy to predict how prices will change in the future. If economic trends were easy to predict, everyone would do it. Still, as the supply of available trucks increases and demand drops, it’s reasonable to expect prices to start trending downward in the future.
