Used vehicles get a bad rap, but any experienced car buyer knows that used vehicles sometimes offer the most value to your daily travels. Sure, there’s a time and a place for brand-new vehicles with shiny features. But, buying used opens up the door to a variety of model years and trims, allowing for a lot of customization when looking for the ideal model. This is never more true than when looking at used trucks for sale; a good used truck has value far beyond the cost savings. There are a lot of great trucks out there, but when it comes to getting that great used truck aesthetic, very few hold a candle to the Chevy Silverado.

This truck is the product of over 100 years of Chevy trucking history, a nameplate that has been with us for almost 25 years. After a quarter of a century on the market, a truck has a lot of value to offer, no matter what model year you’re buying from. But how did the Silverado get to this level of renown? What is it about this truck that not only keeps it in the market but keeps it in its prestigious position as a crowd favorite? Let’s do a case study on the Silverado and see how this truck has become an American icon.

Back in the Old Days

It didn’t take long for the automotive industry to invent the truck. It makes sense; the impetus behind the automobile is not only the transportation of humans but also the transportation of goods. If you’re transporting goods, you need a place to store those goods, and so the truck is born. But, some brands entered the truck market well after it was a developed market. Chevy, however, has the unique distinction of being one of the forerunners of the truck market.

Founded in 1911, Chevy was just a few years behind Ford, meaning they were one of the very first brands in the industry. Only seven years into its exciting new life, Chevy made its first truck: the One-Ton. Despite the cool name, this truck only reared up 36 hp, but it also only cost $1,325. Unfortunately, the Silverado isn’t running quite that cheap these days, but you also get almost 20 times the horsepower, so it’s a trade-off.

The Silverado actually started as a trim in 1975, but clearly, drivers recognized that there was something special going on with that trim because they wanted more; in fact, they wanted it so much more that Chevy turned the trim into its own truck in 1999. So, the Silverado entered the scene just in time for a new millennium of innovation and trucking excellence, and the truck certainly has been a leader in this millennium.

In 1999, the Silverado offered a 5.3-liter V8 engine, a feature still sought after in today’s market. 270 hp and 320 pounds-feet of torque are not bad specs by today’s standards, and they were certainly riveting back at the turn of the millennium. This was a significant increase from Chevy’s previous trucks, which topped out at around 180 hp and 290 pounds-feet of torque, so the Silverado was a trailblazer from the start (almost as much as the Chevy Trailblazer).

Now, the old-school boxy style, the nostalgic black plastic handles, and the tailgate rim make the original 1999 Silverado a classic in its own right; if you can find one used, you’ll have a great classic pickup and a great piece of automotive history. But how does the Silverado lead the industry now? After all, 1999 was almost 25 years ago, and the industry has come a long way. As cool as it was at the time, and even with good specs, the 1999 Silverado wouldn’t hold its own in today’s market.

Fast Forward to the “New” Days

The lifespan of the Silverado has been one of constant progress, innovation, and experimentation. Because of that, it’s one of the most exciting vehicles to buy on the used market. Even if you’re getting a feature that has since been discontinued, it’s still likely to be a cool feature that wasn’t discontinued because it was bad or unliked, only because technology or engineering advanced. Even just looking at the last few years of the Silverado, we see amazing progress. After celebrating its 20th birthday in 2019, the Silverado started making some big steps forward.

The 2022 model year was one of those big steps. The addition of the Silverado ZR2 was a huge step forward for the Silverado. This truck has never been a stranger to off-roading and has always had trims and packages to optimize its off-roading capability. But, the ZR2 transformed the vehicle, making it an off-roader rather than a truck with an off-roading trim. With specifically and exclusively-designed architecture, including increased suspension, dual exhaust, and one-of-a-kind traction and handling, the ZR2 has been tearing up the trails like no other Silverado before.

While a trim is advertised under the same banner as all other trims and is considered a modification of the vehicle, the ZR2 was advertised as its own vehicle. In other words, the ZR2 is not a trim of the Silverado 1500 in the traditional sense; its innovative off-road features have made it its own model in many ways. Since the original Silverado ZR2 is now a couple of years old, it’s the perfect time to buy a used model; chances are you’ll be able to find one that’s good as new but with a drastic price reduction.

Of course, the upcoming 2024 model year is seeing the most exciting Silverado innovation yet; the Silverado EV. Trucks are powerful, and so are EVs. Together, they are game-changing. The 2024 Silverado is set to be the most powerful yet, with the GM Ultium powertrain offering over 700 hp. Those of you looking for a used truck won’t be in the market for a Silverado EV quite yet, but this huge step forward goes to show that anyone looking for a reliable used truck is in good hands with a brand and a nameplate that holds nothing back from drivers, always pushing forward into new and daring territory.

Over Two Decades of Innovation, and Still Moving Forward

The market is fickle. Things go in and out of style; people change their minds, and products come and go. You’ve seen it happen, especially in the automotive industry. But, sometimes, a brand is so good, and a particular vehicle is so good, that both the brand and the vehicle find their way to the top and maintain that status. Chevy has been one of the top brands for over 100 years, which is no easy task, especially in an ever-changing, ever-innovating market with lots of competition.

The Silverado has had many competitors arise over the past almost quarter-century. Yet, both the brand and the truck are customer favorites year after year. The Silverado is one of the trucks you see most frequently on the road, and that’s because it continues to deliver not only each year and each new model but each new day with existing models. So, how did the Silverado become an American icon? By constantly delivering on Chevy’s dedication to progress, innovation, and excellence. That’s how.
