How Does Leasing a Truck Work?
For times when you need a vehicle capable of hauling heavy loads that aren’t suitable for a sedan or SUV, nothing beats having a truck. They are the workhorses of the automotive industry. Did you know that you don’t have to buy a truck to have one you can use? You could lease it instead. So how does leasing a truck work?
What Is a Truck Lease?
When you lease a truck, you’re essentially renting it for a set amount of time and miles. Rather than paying the full purchase price of the truck, you’ll pay for usage instead. Leases typically last for somewhere between 1-5 years (usually measured in months), depending on who you’re leasing it from and whether it’s a short-term lease or a long-term lease. You’ll make a downpayment and then make payments on your lease every month.
What Does It Take to Lease a Truck?
You’ll need to have a decent credit score to lease a truck, much like you would if you were to buy one. If your credit score is 650 or higher, the dealership will likely be just fine with leasing a car to you. In addition to a good credit score, be prepared to carry a car insurance policy that has collision and comprehensive coverage. Consider carrying gap insurance as well, though that may not necessarily be a requirement.
What Happens When the Lease Is Over?
Once you’ve reached the end of your lease, you’ll have to return the truck to the dealership. The truck will then be inspected for wear and tear and to ensure that you haven’t exceeded the mileage limit. While you should do your best to keep your truck in as good condition as possible, the dealership expects to find the normal amount of wear and tear on the vehicle for the years you’ve had it and the miles you’ve driven. You’ll be expected to pay for excessive wear and tear, but you don’t need to worry about being charged for every single nick and dent the truck might have. Once you’ve returned the truck, you typically have three options: 1) to settle the lease and walk away, 2) to return the truck and start a new lease, or 3) to purchase the truck at the end of your lease. You’ll have to decide which option is best for you.
What Are the Pros of Leasing a Truck?
Choosing to lease a truck does come with certain advantages over buying it. To start, there’s the matter of affordability. Payments made on a lease are often less than those made to pay off a loan. That makes it easier to afford a truck, something that tends to be on the more expensive side. Leasing also allows you to circumvent the issue of the truck’s resale value dropping. It’s not your truck to resell, so a decrease in the truck’s value isn’t usually going to be your problem. The exception to this is if the decrease in value is due to excessive wear and tear or putting too many miles on the truck, in which case you’ll be charged for such things upon returning the truck to the dealership. If you’re someone who likes to upgrade your vehicle regularly, leasing a truck makes that easy. Just lease a new model after your old lease is up. Alternatively, you can choose to purchase the truck if you’ve fallen in love with it throughout your lease. For these reasons, some people find leasing a truck to be a better option than purchasing one.
What Are the Cons of Leasing a Truck?
While there is certainly the option to buy the truck at the end of the lease, it’s not a choice that works for everyone. It’s easy to get caught up in a cycle of endless leases that ultimately mean that you don’t ever actually own a truck yourself. If you continue to enter new lease agreements, you’ll also have to make a downpayment with each one, which can be a lot to shell out at once for some people. There’s also the risk of being hit with excessive wear and tear charges, as well as charges for exceeding the agreed-upon mileage for the lease. These charges can easily eat into all the savings you’ve gained from the lower monthly payments often associated with a truck lease. It’s also worth noting that you may not always be able to lease the truck you want simply because there may not be an option to lease the vehicle you’re interested in. For these reasons, some people find purchasing a truck to be a better option than leasing one.
Leasing a truck can be a great option for people who need a truck but for whom buying one isn’t the right option.
