The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in America since 1981. It’s no wonder then that used Ford trucks like the F-150 retain their value so well and continue to serve workers and families across the country. This truck is an icon in the pickup truck world, combining the power of a workhorse with innovative features and rugged sophistication. The last 15 years of Ford F-150s have been loved by Ford enthusiasts, professionals, laborers, and everyday Americans alike. There have been many updates and upgrades during this time, with Ford putting innovation at the forefront of its priorities. Let’s take a look at how the Ford F-150 has evolved since 2009.

12th Generation

The 12th generation of the Ford F-150 gives us a hefty dose of nostalgia, and we’re thrilled to see one every time it passes through our dealership, though they don’t last long. This generation spans from 2009 to 2014, each year between bringing its own smaller updates and improvements. During this time, Ford was listening to its customers, who were weathering the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. Improved efficiency and practicality were hallmarks of this generation.

2009 Ford F-150

As mentioned, 2009 was the introduction of the 12th generation of the Ford F-150. As such, many design and functionality features were reimagined by Ford to appeal to its consumer-base. Notably, Ford introduced a new engine option for this generation, the 4.6L 3V (3-valve) V8 engine. This engine gave drivers a fuel-efficient option that offered even more power than the existing 4.6L 2V (2-valve) V8, which was a layover from the 2008 Ford F-150. The industry-leading 5.4L 3V Triton V8 engine continued to be offered in this generation, too, but it received a tune-up that provided more fuel efficiency and power.

Overall, Ford focused its enhancements on physical capabilities, increasing towing and payload capacities to make it even more competitive in the full-size pickup truck market. It didn’t forget some of the luxuries, though, adding a bolder grille to the front and increasing aerodynamics for aesthetic as well as efficiency reasons. Ford’s SYNC infotainment systems also came with this generation of trucks, cutting-edge technology for the time.

Other enhancements on the 2009 model included new and enhanced trim levels, including:

Platinum: This trim was new in 2009 and offered luxury with a unique grille, upgraded leather, wood trim, and advanced technology.

STX: This trim was updated to have a sportier look while maintaining affordability. It was aimed at style-conscious buyers.

FX4: This trim saw some improvements year-over-year, including better off-road capabilities like specialized suspension, skid plates, and distinct styling.

Finally, new safety features like additional airbags and improved stability control systems were added to this generation of F-150s. Ford vehicles are known for their safety, and this was true even all the way back in 2009.

2010 Ford F-150

The SVT Raptor off-road truck was introduced with a 320 hp 5.4L V8 engine during this model year. Ford also introduced the MyKey system as a standard feature. This system let drivers configure the truck’s ignition key to restrict specific vehicle functions and encourage safer driving.

2011 Ford F-150

This model year saw the introduction of a new Lariat Limited trim level. Electric assist power steering also became available.

2012 Ford F-150

2012 saw the introduction of the FX appearance package as well as a neutral tow capability for trucks equipped with four-wheel drive.

2013 Ford F-150

The 2013 version of the F-150 saw a minor facelift. There was a new grill option as well as high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps. Drivers could also opt for 18- and 20-inch wheels.

2014 Ford F-150

Ford added a new sports truck trim this year called the Tremor, which came equipped with a short wheelbase and locking rear differential.

13th Generation

Ford introduced a new generation of F-150 pickup trucks in the model year 2015. The changes that were seen served to underscore Ford’s commitment to innovation while maintaining the F-150’s classic charm and can-do-appeal in the full-size pickup truck segment.

2015 Ford F-150

The biggest change in this new generation of Ford F-150s was the fact that the truck body went fully aluminum. This massive change meant that the F-150 lost 700 total pounds! That’s some glow-up! This weight loss significantly improved fuel efficiency and the trucks’ payload capacity. The exterior design became more aerodynamic and modern as well.

New and improved engine options were introduced in this generation of the Ford F-150. A more powerful and efficient 2.7L EcoBoost V6 was added, as well as a new 10-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, there were significant advancements in technology for this generation. The SYNC infotainment system was updated, and a 360-degree camera system was added ahead of the May 2018 mandatory backup camera law. Lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control were also added in this generation.

2016 Ford F-150

The 2015 model year saw the introduction of a new Special Edition package for the XLT and Lariat trim levels. Ford upgraded the SYNC 3 communications and entertainment systems as well.

2017 Ford F-150

A 10-speed transmission available with a 375-hp twin-turbo 3.5L V6 engine became available during this model year. 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity was also added as an option for the first time!

2018 Ford F-150

Auto Start-Stop for all engines was added for the 2018 model year.

2019 Ford F-150

A high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine was added by Ford this year, along with a new dual-exhaust system. The interior got a facelift, moving the interior color scheme from Navy Pier to a two-tone Camel Back to give a more modern and sleek feel to the cab.

2020 Ford F-150

Ford added an available 3.0L Power Stroke V6 Turbo Diesel engine and expanded its safety technology suite. Additions to the Co-Pilot360 package included automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and pedestrian detection. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility were also added to give drivers and passengers even more connectivity possibilities.

14th Generation

The 14th Generation of the Ford F-150 began in the model year 2021 and brought many changes and improvements to this much-loved truck.

2021 Ford F-150

2021 was the first time in the F-150’s history that an electric and a hybrid trim were included in the lineup! The fully electric version was the F-150 Lightning, and the hybrid trim was the PowerBoost pickup truck. The PowerBoost combined the power of the 3.5 L EcoBoost V6 with a hybrid motor/generator. This decision to start moving into the electric and hybrid category set Ford up as a leader in the industry, refusing to shy away from making strong, capable trucks that run on electricity instead of just gasoline. The standard engine options remained essentially the same, with only the 5.0 L V8 receiving a new cylinder deactivation system to help improve its efficiency.

Overall, this new generation, beginning in 2021, looked (design-wise) similar to the previous generation. Ford wanted to keep it classic, but they still redesigned the functionality and added improvements to 92% of the 2021’s total parts! In the interior, fold-flat front seats and larger touchscreens were added.

2022 Ford F-150

During this model year, Ford discontinued the 3.0 L Power Stroke turbo-diesel V6 option because of low consumer demand, another testament to Ford’s good decision to move into electric vehicles.

2023 Ford F-150

The 2023 model year saw the launch of a special F-150 Heritage Edition and the introduction of the F-150 Raptor R. The Tremor was made available with a 5.0L V8 engine.

2024 Ford F-150

The 2024 model year saw a major facelift for this classic pickup truck. New and upgraded headlights, tail lights, and grilles were added, as well as the Pro Access Tailgate featuring a swing-out door configuration that made it easier to reach cargo in the bed. The SuperCab with the 8’ bed and 3.3-liter V6 engine were also discontinued for this model year.
